Susannah Leonard Hill is once again hosting a teensie weensie Halloweensie writing contest. The rules of the contest are to write a 100-word or less Halloween story for children that uses the words pumpkin, broomstick, and creak (or any form of these words including creaky, creaked, pumpkiny, pumpkining, broomstuck, broomstickier, etc.) The story can be written in prose or poetry. Here’s my tale, which might be best read on November 1:

The Morning After
Last night she flew beneath the moon
and cackled at each ghost and ghoul.
She waved her wand and cast a spell,
bewitching every home and school.
She sped through graveyards, swooped through barnyards,
scaring pumpkins, stealing treats.
She gave each cat a broomstick ride
and stayed up late to haunt the streets.
But now she’s queasy–ghostly pale–
with creaky knees and achy head.
She drinks a potion, chants a charm,
then moans and groans and slumps to bed.
Very cool! Loved the pov and mood. Cleverly done.
Awww… Poor thing. It’s terrible when a witch looks ghostly! I love all the action and the perfect meter and rhyme.
Thanks, Liz–I do feel bad for making my witch so sick. I’m sure she’ll be better before next Halloween.
Oh boy, she kind of asked for it, didn’t she! Good luck in the contest. 🙂
We all get carried away once in a while–but witchy paid the price! Thanks for stopping by, Christie.
Love it! Great rhyme and story for kids and awesome twist for adults readers.
Thank you, Jilanne–I hoped this one would be fun for the adult reader too (at least I amused myself!)
Isn’t it called “hair of the dog” when you cure your next-day hangover with more of the same. Poor witchy – I don’t think she could take anymore! I’m slumping off for a nap now…
You read more into that potion and charm than I intended, Cathy! But now that I read it, I think you’re right about the witch’s “medicine.”
Fantastic, fun twist, Buffy. You made me chuckle. Nicely done!
Glad to supply a chuckle, Nancy! What more could anyone ask for?
Too bad. Hope she recovers soon. Love the rhythm!
Thank you, Linda. I suspect she’ll be back on her broomstick by November fourth.
Ah, yes. The post-Halloween hangover. Great POV in this poem, Buffy!
Thanks, Carrie–and thanks for posting about the Halloweensie contest and inspiring me to write this!
So fun . . . for us, not for your green-around-the-gills witch!
Poor witch–the morning after is never fun for the wild ones.
What great artwork to go with your story. Vert clever — the morning after. Great entry.
Thank you, Patricia–glad you enjoyed it!
Fun POV, Buffy (and I love your dragonfly pic at the top!)
Thanks, Wendy (that dragonfly was in my backyard a few years ago, posing for his/her picture.)
Hahaha, Buffy! Great rhyme, and fun story! Poor old with – feeling her age a little?! I can relate! I love that she “slumps” to bed – what a great word! Thanks so much for joining in the Halloweensie fun! 🙂
Unfortunately I can relate, too, Susanna. Thanks for stopping by, and especially for hosting a fun contest!
This is great, Buffy! Beautifully written and clever with a fun ending. Nice job! 🙂
Thanks, Cheryl–glad you enjoyed it!
Love this! Would love to know what form of poetry this is. :0)
Thanks Donna. I don’t think it’s any particular form other than ABCB, iambic tetrameter. But I am not an expert on poetic forms!
We’ve all felt like that after a scary night:)
And a night of too much partying!
She does look a bit green!
Yes, I was glad to find plenty of green-faced witches online (must be a common ailment!)
Great job, Buffy! I love the idea of the morning after for a witch! Clever!
Thank you, Penny (and your comments helped me revise!)
:•)
I love this poem. So fun. Plus you tell the other side of the story.
Thanks ,Ann–I was going for “the other side of the story” so I’m glad that came through!
Ha! A fun poem with a fresh perspective, Buffy. (I imagine Santa feels much the same on December 26th!) Good choice of clip art to go with it, too.
Thanks, Michelle. I suspect Santa is in a sugar-haze on the 26th from all those cookies. He’s likely lactose intolerant, too.
This is great, love the topic and the ending!
Thanks, Marlaina–glad you stopped by!
Now we know how the witches feel! Very creative POV. 🙂
Thanks, Keila–probably everyone feels let down after the big day.
How fun to hear the witch’s take on Halloween and great ending Buffy!
Thank you, Catherine–glad you enjoyed it!
